Do both! When I converted from dino to synth trans oil, I pulled off the side cover then used a shop vac with a trash bag liner and some sand in the bottom to soak it up. I duct taped a smaller hose inside the shop vac hose and it worked like a champ. Being really anal, I replaced the cover with a new gasket, filled up with synth, drove around for a few miles, and did it all over again to make sure I had gotten it really cleaned out. No problem with the Redline leaking on my trans with 70K miles. Oh, I recall removing the skid plate to get to everything. Polished it up real nice at the same time!
