I thought I was getting a deal and a half a few years ago when I bought s "spotless" '88 900S with only 99.5 K on the clock. The transmission failed about 3 months later. I ended up replacing the transmission with a rebuilt from Andrews of Princeton (in MN) and doing all the R&R labor myself. I had the time and I was interested. The car you're looking at sounds good, but instead of taking confidence from the suggestions of the board, you would be well served to take the car to a reputable Saab mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection. Some people like to do this to find points to haggle over with regard to the price - personally I just like having the peace of mind that I'm not buying a genuine POS.
You should take all that with a grain of salt though - I bout both of my saabs the first day I saw them. Perhaps you'll be smarter than me.
Good luck though - the 89-90 are thought to be better years for the 900's transmission. The root cause for transmission failures though isn't GM's purchase of Saab (as Saana88 suggests) In fact transmission failures generally have more to do with rough shiufting of a box that was designed way back in the 70's when 110hp was an unbelievable amount from a 4cyl.
