First gear is a hard one to break but my brother managed to do it in my first 900 a couple of years ago when I was teaching him to drive. He stalled it hard and cracked one of the teeth off the gear. I drove it that way for about 2 months without any major problems - just sounded like a cv joint when I had to use that gear. Looking back on it, it was a bad idea. That loose tooth was floating around in the transmission and by the time I took it apart, it had made its way into the differential housing (not an easy feat). If it had lodged somewhere along the way the whole tranny could have locked right up. BAD.

So, if he chipped a gear, I wouldn't drive it at all. If the synchro is just shot, don't worry about it. As long as you don't live in the mountains you should be able to clutch it out in 2nd from stops. First is geared too low to be much good anyway...
