Either spark or fuel related, both having to do with lack of elec current. With the engine idling you can check some basic elec connections like the plug/wire connected to the side of the distributor. Moving wires around can sometimes identify a loose connection. The fuse/relay box connections can loosen beneath, or where the relay prongs push into the base. The plug connectors/wiring below can slip down. Is it a turbo? If so, the over-boost fuel pump cut-off switch might be going bad or has a circuit connection problem. I once discovered a problem in the multi-pin plug which connects the interior/dash wiring to the fuse box. I discovered it by accident when my leg pushed against the plug through the carpet. Before then I had intermittent engine cut-off problems just as you described. It was the over-boost cut-off switch circuit at that plug connection that was the problem. I simply bypassed it under the fuse box. No problems since then. The fuel pump connections can also cause a problem if they're loose or corroded. Also, the fuel pump itself might be dying.
