That is EXACTLY what happened to me in my '85 900T, right down to the mechanic not knowing what it was. He replaced the fuel pump and the next day it did it again. After getting the car towed back to his shop, he started to go over everything again and it dawned on him that it might be the Hall Effect Sensor, so he rebuilt the distributor and swapped the old fuel pump back in and everything worked great until the day I gave the car away. The mechanic (Bob at East of Sweden in Boulder, CO, I recommend him very highly!) didn't charge me anything for the second day of work.

He explained to me that sometimes when the sensors start to go bad they will be effected by the heat in the engine compartment and just stop working. After a while, when things cool down a bit, everything works fine until the sensor heats up a bit. The second time this happened to me (in my '89 900TC), I was able to limp home about 50 miles on a hot day by pouring ice water over the distributor every time it quit working (I don't recommend this, but it got me home).
