1. The car is n/a and has the 2.1l, the service shop had just done a head gasket repair. But there was coolant leaking from one of the hoses (steam coming from a point on the front of the engine where the hose connects to a metal piece, and coolandt covered some of the engine) and the underside of the engine (and the protective pan at the bottom) were drenched in oil. I assume this means some seals are going/gone.

2. On the head, there was a translucent red substance sticking out where the head gasket would be -- is that what people use in head gasket repair?

3. The car smoked slightly from the engine at stoplights and at idle, it semlled like hot oil and burning oil (clearly not from the exhaust, thought), and from the interior of the car the engine made a "whupwhupwhupwhupwhupwhup" noise. When the hood was popped, I didn't hear that noise but did hear what sounded like valve tap clicking. What's up with that?

4. Brake pedal application was very firm -- the pedal moved very little when applied, and you really had to get on the brakes to make them work (of course, my daily driver is a Volvo V70R, which has terrific brakes, so I may be comparing apples to oranges).

4. There was avery distinct straining sound, kind of like compressor whine, coming from the engine (left side as I was sitting in the drivers seat) that rose and fell with revs. I used to have an old 8v 900 and don't remember hearing this.

5. The car lost steam at about 3500-4000 rpm, and really sounded like it was straining. My old 900 8v certainly lost steam then too, but a 16v head is supposed to help that, and my old 8v sounded a lot healthier. What;s up here do you think?

6. When accelerating the gear lever vibrates noticeably, much more than my old 8v did, and the car shudders ever so slightly.

The car is otherwise in very nice shape, under 100k miles, clean, with good shifting transmission, some suspension groan that might need addressing, new exhaust.

Just want to get your thoughts before I go deeper. My inclination is to walk awya or lowball hard given the real fussiness of the car. I'm going to have another mechanic look at it (the seller is, himself, a Saab mechanic, but I want a second opinion given all the issues I see).
