the engines will run forever, but if there is a water leak that was not addressed, the floor will eventually rust through.

Simply unscrew the door sill panels and peel up the carpet to look underneath to inspect the floors in the front. Fold down rear seat to inspect for rust in the back floor. Check the area where the fender liners join the floor.

As others have suggested look for a turbo with manual trans. Run the car in 4th and 5th gear on a smooth road. if you hear a gear whine under power, the pinion bearing at the back of the trans is going, and the car will need a new trans/rebuild. +$2000 unless diy.

Look for bubbles in the coolant reservoir coming from the small hose connection from the radiator when you rev the engine. Sign of a bad headgasket. $1000($150diy).

Make sure A/C works. best if converted to 134a. If A/C bad, figure on $500-$700 diy. Hoses leak.

When stopped, shift into reverse. If crunch, the pilot bearing in the flywheel is bad or the splined clutch shaft is rusty. You can live with this until you replace the clutch by shifting into second before you quickly hit reverse. This stops the trans from moving when you shift into reverse.

Take a peak where the front lower control arms mount to the body. Rust here requires welding a new mount in. Usually passenger side.

Finally avoid a car with rotted wiring harnesses.
