Air wouldn't be needed, nice touch if you have it. Can buy canned air at photo stores, or blow thru a straw, if you feel the keed to apply some. Just wiggling the key, putting it in and out lots of times, and switching throughout the cycle lots of times, should work out most of what remained in there. Follow up re-rinse, repeat working key. a couple times, should clear things out pretty well.
The point, that sugar doesn't dissolve in most solvents (rubbing alcohol, with a percentage of water, would cut both grease and sugar) is a good one, and if solvent doesn't fix things, I'd certainly try boiling H-2-O.
