Yes, synthetic motor oil resists breakdown much better than 'regular' base stock oil. It retains vicosity and lubricity much longer - important qualities.

But engine oil, all engine oil, gathers up nasty chemicals over time and use. Acids are formed by the combination of moisture and combustion by-products. There are buffers in the oil to combat these, but over time those buffers are used up.

Oil filters don't remove the nasty acids and other chemicals that form. Oil filters also only filter down so far - there are fine particles that still circulate. And if you don't think fine particles can do damage, you've never polished anything.

Modern engine do a much better job of limiting the combustion by-products into the oil, but as engines age, some blow-by is inevitable. If you've got a car on this BB, it's at least 12 years old - probably older.

I would never go beyond 10K miles in a car engine, no matter what magical oil I had. The oil may be fine, but the gunk in it that builds up over time isn't. One advantage of changing the oil is that you take that gunk out of the engine and start fresh.

Synthetic oil is expensive, but frequent oil changes are still a whole lot cheaper than engine work.
