i cant help but notice you said you have a long 5th on your 88, i was looking around to find a differnt 5th gear to do just that, (when i drop 5th she would run at 65 in 1100 rpms) but everyone i spoke with said it cant be done or there is no other gear out there for something like that. i dont know if this is what you ment by long 5th but i have to ask,
bout the cat. i was under the impression every car made after the 80`s required them to have a cat. (my 88 has one)
but seeing you said your proformance is nice with out one, makes me think of dropping mine out and taken it for a spin.
the cat.s are inplace for emission control, a failing cat. will not let the car pass its emission test given by your state (only a select few)
in failing the test you will not be able to get the new yr. sticker at the d.m.v. untill your cat. is replaced so the car is once again able to pass.
i have heard a story where a car was repowed, when the car was at the shop it ran fine, it was parked in the far back lot and was not started again, or tryed to be started for a few yrs after, the mechanic said when they tryed to start it and they could not, worked on it for a few hours but still would not start, so the car sat few more months. when a salvager for cat.s stoped in to collect any cat.s that where available, the shop pointed at the car in the far back lot and gave them the keys for what ever reason (the salvager was informed about the cars no start problem) after the salvager removed the cat. for reasons unknowen (not wanting to walk back) tryed to start the car and it started right up.
so the point i got out of it is drop the cat. if all else fails.
if it would be a problem in you 50mph and over it can always be pulled then run the car to see if the problem is still there or if it is in fact the cat./kat./
