I just changed my first set of alternator bushings and wanted to pass on a few things I learned that I haven't seen on other posts:

Backwards lower bolt-- I discovered that the lower bolt was reversed on my car. Apparently some mechanics reverse the direction of the lower bolt after they have worked on the alternator so that the head is oriented towards the front instead of the firewall. This has the advantage of eliminating the need to go through all of the contortions needed to get the bolt to clear the firewall (described on the Townsend Imports site), but as far as I could tell forces the removal of the oil filter housing (three easy to get at bolts) and deal with replacing its gasket. Actually seems like a pretty good trade-off since the housing comes off and goes back on quite easily, but the trade-off is the potential of a new oil leak if the housing gasket doesn't hold.

2. Some mechanics also replace the alternator bracket hex bolts with regular style bolts. Not a problem unless you are inexperienced as I am, and get confused trying to follow procedures that keep mentioning the need to remove hex bolts.

3. The flanges on the lower bracket bushings should both be oriented so that they contact the inner surface of the bracket and squeeze tightly against the alternator when installed. In my car's case, one of the bushings was intalled in reverse so that the flange was on the outside of the mounting hole. This worked I guess, but must have resulted in way too much slop. When I installed the new bushings the correct way, getting alternator to squeeze into the bracket was really hard. The only way I was able to do it ultimately was to remove the bracket (easy once the alternator is out) and bang the new bushings with a hammer so that they are seated as deeply as they'll go (and then test fitting the alternator to make sure it will slide in between). There is probably a way to do this without removing the bracket, but having it out made the job much easier.

A local Saab mechanic told me that the project to replace the bushings and belts should take about two hours. It took me a solid day, but then I was learning as I was going.
