Thanks for your thoughtful response to my transmission inquiry. There are 2 shims between the pinion housing and the case. I have not measured their thickness. I will do that this weekend.The pinion housing bolts are torqued to the specified 18 ft lbs. The transmission has about 150,000 on it and I do not think it has been previously rebuilt. I am the third owner and I have most of the previous repair records. The transmission always worked well however depending on if it was warmed up; it was a little notchy going into second sometimes. The previous owner was using Redline so I continued; my other Saabs I always used 10w - 30w with good results. It developed a transmision whine which I determined was probably failing pinion bearings about a 2000 miles ago. The bearing are very rough and noisy and there is quite a bit of axial play and end play of the pinion shaft. Theorectically if they did make a mistake at the factory with the pinion depth or stack height would it not be better to leave it there as this is where the pinion and crown and the other gears have been wearing for 150,000 miles? I quess this would also depend on if replacing the pinion bearings would change these measurements? However, I gather from your post that since mechanics generally reuse the same thickness shims that replacing the bearing will not normally change the settings? Also would there be any benefit to pay a shop to measure the pinion depth with the Saab tool after the pinion bearings have been replaced? Hopefully this weekend my brother will be able to help me double check my measurements. He has recently checked his caliper for accurancy and with an extra set of hands I can double check this way out of spec reading.
