Got the red 1990 convertible running after its five year nap. It has a rebuilt engine pulled from a 1987 SPG - I'm told the engine has done less than 500 miles. I'm also told the cylinder head is new - not remanufactured, but new. No idea how that got pulled off, or if it's true. After putting everything together and turning the key, it started right up and settled into a healthy idle.

Unfortunately, there is a LOT of noise coming from the cylinder head. I put about 30 miles on it keeping revs under 3k and it didn't go away. I added 1qt of Marvel Mystery Oil to the oil and did another 30 miles, and the clatter hasn't changed volume.

I pulled the valve cover and there is definitely oil getting up there. The oil feed rails (early style head) are brand new and look great. I compressed the lifted with a screwdriver (levered against the cam) and they all move freely through ~1/2" travel.

1. Is it possible that since everything up top is new it's taking a while to break the cam in? I think that sounds silly, but what do I know?
2. The valve cover is from a later car - it has the thicker gasket. I recall earlier valve covers had some provision to hold the oil feed rails in place - is that my imagination? I don't have an old one to compare against.

I have not checked the pad on the valve cover to see if it's gotten old, but this really sounds like valve clatter and not a rattly timing chain. I've also not yet checked oil pressure - that's on the docket for tomorrow.

Anyone have any other thoughts?
