you can also use wirecutters, put the clamp in place, then use the wire cutters first from one side of the opening, and then from the other, you can also smack the bump as it comes up with a small hammer.
You position the wire cutters with the handle parralel to the half shaft to squeeze the two parralel sides of the clamp towards each other, then reposition on the other side of the clamp with your wire cutters pointing back where your handle just was, you can go back and forth a couple of times, go slowly... this will push the sides together just like the tool, but it will not push the center piece in like the tool does. you can 1) leave it 2) keep the wire cutters in place and smack the hump with a hammer to put it in some and then re-crimp with the wire cutters. It will not look exactly the same but it does work.
