Problem with telescoping steering column/wheel...

OK. Just got the car of my dreams (I'm 32, and I've wanted a Saab 900 since I was 14 years old). It's a beautiful '89 900 SPG. It's a dream to drive - the dude I got it from replaced the head gasket and let me have it for a great deal. So I'm thrilled as ever.

The dash and instrument panel were sun-damaged and cracking. So I replaced them today. However, when pulling off the steering wheel, I was pulling hard - and the whole column came up about an inch and a half. I got the wheel off after that by improvising a steering wheel puller, but I don't know the details about this column - and I'm worried about it coming apart or something. Putting it all back together, there's a gap, and the horn sensor won't make contact with the column anymore, and I think the turn signal indicators are affected as well.

The book says that it's a telescoping column, and you can't hammer on it. How do I get it telescoped back down? Am I a total bonehead, and is there an adjustment somewhere that I'm missing? Any help is appreciated.
