Faulty ignition amplifier, or so I thought.

1990 Saab 900S. A cautionary tale of how I almost unnecessarily bought an ignition amplifier.

As has been the case lately, I spent the weekend working on the Saab. The focus was on the cooling system, so I replaced all the hoses, pulled the radiator to have a look, and just generally tidied things up. I also replaced the battery cables, the cable connecting the alternator to the starter, and cleaned up any electric connection I could get to. Replaced the alternator bushings and a few other things as long as everything was dismantled and easier to access.

Finished the job mid-day Sunday and it would not start. I retraced my steps to make sure I didn't forget to reconnect anything. Found nothing. Pulled one of the plugs and determined I had no spark.

I started to run the diagnostics listed in the Bentley. I had power to the coil, the ignition control unit, and the ignition amplifier. I checked the coil and knock sensor. When I ran the diagnostic for the ignition amplifier switching function (Bentley page 340-10 for those of you following along in our hymnal), it tested bad. Bentley says if this is the case, replace the ignition amplifier. I figured before I ordered the part, that I'd make sure the wiring between the coil and ignition amp was sound.

What I found was that I hadn't reconnected the coolant temperature sender (top left of the radiator)properly. Stupid, and basic, mistake. Anyway, when I reconnected it, the car started just fine.

I looked at the wiring schematic this morning and don't know that the temperature sender is listed anywhere. Obviously it feeds into the system somewhere, maybe the control unit, which feeds info to the amplifier?

I guess the bottom line is that I should have been a little more careful when plugging everything back together.
