Just stopping, I assume Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Sat, 7 Mar 2009 09:33:11 In Reply to: 1989 saab 900i Breaking down - then working hours later, Gabe, Fri, 6 Mar 2009 19:15:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Breaking down is a pretty general statement. I assume you're driving along and the car stops. It won't restart until it cools off.
When the car stops, does it cut off like you turned the key off? Or does it slowly lose power, chug, cough, and then eventually die out? When it won't restart, does it try and catch, or just nothing but engine cranking?
After the car won't start, turn the key to the ON (run) position, but don't try to start the car. Do you see dash idiot lights? (ABS, battery, etc.)
If you don't get dash indicator lights when you turn the key to ON, I'd suspect the ignition switch. If you do get dash lights, but the engine basically stops running, I'd suspect the Ignition Amplifier. It heats up and dies. That's the electrical gizmo mounted on the left front fender. If you're able, try putting something cold on it, and see if the car starts up again. If so, you need a new one.
fuel pumps usually don't stop working in mid -run. They'll keep the car from starting, but if the car starts OK, the pump is usually OK. Now, the things that tell the fuel pump to run, that's another story. The ignition amplifier provides information to the spark plugs, and also tells the fuel injection computer that the engine is turning. The FI computer then turns on the fuel pump.
but provide as much information as you can - how does the car die? What lights come on (or don't?). Is this recent? Suddenly showing up, or always there but now more frequent? How long have you had the car, and what maintenance? Does the gas tank level affect it (over half tank)?
A LOT of thinks can cause a car to stop. Depending on how the car stops, it could be fuel or spark. I'm suspecting spark (and the ignition amplifier) because one failure mode is to quit when they get warm.
