I put a new compressor in about 1.5 yrs ago. new hoses too.So this is my first hands-on attempt at A/c charging/topping off.
Its getting warm in Nj and I tried to run the A/c today- and it didn't do much , couldn't notice the compressor clutch kick in. I squeezed the hoses and they were pretty solid so I knew they weren't blown and also checked for a solid fit at the hose collars.
I figured I'm just a little soft on charge and had this Artic Freeze "Smart Charge" kit laying around- I tested it and it indicated "low charge". There's a 14 oz can in the kit so I put that in- about the end of the can the compressor starts engaging/clicking quickly on/off and the lower (thicker)compressor gooseneck is starting to chill. so I get a new 13 oz can. The light on the smart charge says low charge at this point.
I start loading the 2nd can and get to about the end of it and I'm finding the low pressure gooseneck is chilly/sweating and that I'm getting good cold air inside - but the unit indicates "low charge"????? So I fiddle with the reset and and the unit starts highlighting ALERT(red indicator), Warning (yellow indicator) AND Low charge (white indicator).
The instructions don't tell me what this combination means- am I overcharged ( I figure I got 1.5- 1.75 cans into the system) the hoses are hard as rocks and the low pressure gooseneck on the compressor is chilly(sweaty). Its cold coming from the vents . BUT I don't notice that the compressor cycling on/off.
Any ideas to find out how/if I'm overcharged given the set of indicators Alert/Warning and Lowcharge- which doesn't tell me much.
I call their help line but its just a recording to leave a number as all attendants are busy- (right). I think if I had to do this over again I'd buy the can with the guage /hose connect- then I'd see the status and not rely on conflicting blinking lights behind the alert /warning and low charge indicators. Is it possible to "bleed " the excess like a tire ? or will the valve get stuck in the open position and piss out all my R134a.
Thanks
