*sigh*
I've painted all the classic 900s I've owned. I started off by just sanding them, and taking them to various shops to have them painted. I even bought a GM Exec. demo 1991 spg that was red, and spent a week prepping it for painting to black. I looked really cool with the hood open ... red interior, black exterior.
If you want to do the job properly, bank on 40 hours of sanding time with a 240 grit or finer. I put nylon rope under the rubber of the rear hatch window to lift the rubber off the body so there wouldn't be any paint masking lip. Ditto for the rubber along the top of the windshield. Note: the paint I used is an expoxy that can cover 240 grit sanding. If you are using other paint, I'd go with 320 or 400 grit. I used Endura paint... they use it on aircraft and snowgraders because it is so hard wearing. (Endura in Edmonton, Alberta Canada). Wet sanding with a bit of dishwashing liquid added to the water works best.
I removed the mirrors, and rear side windows completely (getting at the hinge screws by drilling out the rivets).
It's a lot of work... I eventually ended up painting one of my own saabs at a DIY paint booth. It turned out great! Gotta pay attention to how the paint lies while you are painting, watching for orange peel, or drips.
You'll need at least 8 litres (quarts) to do a good job. Good luck!
