I think a lot of the reasons for such variation in opinions is due to the very different lives each transmission has led. Some owners never change their fluid & never experience any problems. Other owners have lots of problems & try to minimize them by frequent fluid changes. Meaning, do what makes you comfortable.
My '90 was not well cared for by the PO, so its 5sp tranny requires a fluid change every 30k-40k mi to keep shifting well. Once I discovered the problem (I bought the car from the 2nd owner with 113k mi on it), my mechanic swapped the gear oil for fully synthetic BG SycroShift II. Since that particular fluid is so expensive, I've only used fully synthetic dual-rated engine oil for the past several years. The (still original) tranny now has over 248k mi on it & shifts better than when I bought it over 10-1/2 yrs ago.
The tranny fluid in these drive trains sees much higher temps than either a standard in-line drive train or a transverse setup (like Honda's). As already mentioned by John N, the tranny is a huge heat-sink for the engine. Additionally, it's blocked from cooling airflow by the clutch & skidplate. I'd never use Honda fluid in my tranny for a number of reasons, & only one of them is the heat factor. But again, if you're comfortable with it, don't listen to anybody else.
