I recently replaced a brake booster on the same car - 88 900TC. When it went bad (and it got worse gradually over time), there was a very evident hissing sound, loss of power brake assist and poor idling due to the vacuum lost through the leaking booster. It does not sound like you have those symptoms.
You're not loosing fluid, which would rule out leaks at the brake calipers, and it doesn't sound like the booster. My guess would be a faulty brake master. I am assuming the pedal gradually sinks to the floor, probably most evident when you are sitting stopped, say at a light. And when you pump the pedal, it probably brings it back up.
Changing the brake master is not a bad job, although you will need to bleed both clutch and brakes.
