Yhe lower milage was caused by the crow that landed in the pine tree which caused a pinecone to fall from the tree and hit the windshield of a car travelling 67 mph. When the pine cone hit the wihdshield it startled the driver and caused him to let of the gas peddle and slow the car to roughly 63 mph. This reduction in speed caused the car to be at a point on the road exactly 1.3 seconds later than if the car had maintained the same speed. This change in the time/point on the road theory caused the car to be in the exact place to hit and splatter a butterfly across the windshield. This is the exact reason you car got less milage with ethnol. I don't know if I would call it a phenomenon because it all seems pretty clear.
