The pinion bearing is failing (has failed), allowing axial movement of the entire gear stack. This is abrading and destroying the gears at the input end. Gears are expensive.
You can drive it, but doing so will incrementally destroy more parts.
Rebuilding is required (or replacement with a rebuilt tranny).
I've been inside a couple of transmissions that have failed this way. I doubt very much that heavy gear oil will help you. The bearing is already damaged and thicker lubricant will not stop it from slopping about.
