Manual Transmission OIl Change

Looking to change the the oil in my 85 SPG. I doubt it has ever been changed - certainly not in the last 60,000 miles that I've owned it (car has 120,000 miles on it). My last SAAB, an 1987 900S never had the transmission oil changed and I sold that at 240,000 miles - transmission was OK.
Now I certainly don't believe in ignoring maintenance, but IIRC, there were two schools of thought on tranny oil in classic 900s: "Change it religiously" or "don't touch it" and I'm not here to start a debate!
My questions is can I switch to a synthetic oil into a tranny that probably been run with dino juice for the past 25 years? Seems that with engine oil, again IIRC, changing to synthetic later in life caused lots of leaks.
Also, which oil is recommended these days for the manual transmission?
Finally, if the drain bolt is seized from lack of use, what is my best option to remove the oil?
I know similar questions have been asked many times before, but I never saw any reference to the dino vs synthetc question.
Thanks in advance!
Barry
