having owned an 82 240 for a few years here's my take

body, design and ergonomics - both sedans and Normally Aspirated, saab a clear winner in the design department- especially in the driver's position - 86 900 still going strong - 240 rusted out- saab put more thought into this

engine and engine management - 240 had a carb setup - easy to work on, simple and lots of space in the engine bay - limited emissions- engine seemed to have more power too under acceleration- volvo had the pushbutton OD - nice to have

handling - saab the clear winner though the 240 was surprisingly lively in the corners

volvo had the pass through ski bag through the arm rest and lots of trunk space - saab lots of trunk space

summing up
the volvo drove more like a late 60s chevy nova - power and handling similar - not spectacular but competent

the 900 is a European sedan and drives like one
