Oldsaab-- Why do you suggest to lossen [sic] the 32 mm axle nuts in order to change ball joints? I just did mine ('93 900S) on both sides, nothing in Bentley remotely suggests doing so, and nothing in your how-to suggests any benefit gained by it, either.

Apologies in advance for piling on (I'm not typically one to chime in with an "Oh yeah? My way's better than yours!) but I'd merely like to suggest an easier way to break the ball joint union (not original to me, I found it among the many thousands of BJ-related comments on the board). Loosen the big nut on the BJ that goes through the spindle but leave it on a few turns to hold things together later. Now drive a pickle fork between the rubber sleeve and the spindle-- pound it in with a hammer or an impact tool. No worries about ripping the boot, the idea is to replace the entire BJ assembly, so have at it. Now, some may have impact tools/air compressors, or arm strength necessary to drive the fork in far enough to release the BJ-- I have none of the above, but I do have a 4-foot 1.5" diameter section of water/gas pipe. Put it (or similar) over the exposed end of the pickle fork and bounce/press lightly on the away end... It's such a sweet sound when it comes free with so little effort.

Finally, let me add that, while they needed replacement, doing the BJs and tie rod ends didn't quiet my ride all that much or anyway to my satisfaction. That only came when I replaced the lower shock bushings. All told, What a Difference! it's a pleasure to drive these days-- perhaps still not as quiet and stately as it should or could (will?) be, but I'm good with it for now.
