Take the wheel off, it just makes things easier. that bolt can be annoying,but If you're throwing the steering wheel out, vice grips will tear it up but it'll work.

BUT...your problem is if either the horn button (20 bucks) or the SRS collar thingy...clockspring.

That is easily pulled from any late model 9000 or any late model 900. the 9000 wire connection is different, but who cares about instantaneous current when you're 'not worried about the airbag'...neither am I, btw. IF you pull one, be VERY gentle when doing the pulling...CONTROL the break-free off the column.
I couldn't get a new 900 clockspring at the dealer 7 years ago, but was able to buy a NEW 9000 clockspring. I figured that any used clockspring had just as much wear.

The 85 column has bushings older than your car's. they'd need to be replaced anyway, and would be good practice to do so regardless.
