Starting fluid into air intake Posted by The Noob Eternal [Email] (#3049) [Profile/Gallery] (more from The Noob Eternal) on Sat, 1 Oct 2011 18:02:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well, Flivver McGee has been sitting around for months. I finally got the ignition figured out - turned out to be the toggle switch itself that had gotten zapped. That's the good news. Yay! It cranks.
Only problem is, that's as far as it goes. There is some oil fouling into the distributor and onto the spark plugs, so that will have to be dealt with in the relatively near future. Meantime, though, the plugs and rotor have been cleaned and - still cranks, seems to be just on the verge of firing up, but no. When we pulled the plugs they smell of fuel, so that part's good.
We're using a battery charger at start-up since the battery had previously run down over the course of time and multiple tries, so charge shouldn't be an issue.
The friend's husband where it's parked (see previous Flivver post if you're curious) - who did, in fact, correctly guess we should look at the spark plugs - wants to try spraying starter fluid into the intake on the engine side of the air filter. I'm concerned it might do some sort of damage to the component(s) downstream. I did figure it would be harmless to let him spray it into the spark plug openings before returning the spark plugs. In theory that would, it seem, allow the car to start up even if it were to then die because of a lack of fuel or water in the line.
So, friends: Would it be safe or foolish to spray starter fluid into the air intake? And do you have other suggestions?
