Today, December 7th 2011 is a sad day as I have to part with my ’86 900S 16V -RIP.
We had 237,000 miles of fun together. Trips to the Shore, parties, family events, and driving the kids to grade school, high school, visiting and graduation trips to colleges from NJ to MA, and NC. And hauling my boat stuff back and forth each year on the NJTP and GSPwy. It was a fun ride. I can still remember the way the car felt the first time I took it for a ride- felt like a machine tool- tight and solid as an Abrams tank. Bought this 900S NEW for cash from the SAAB dealer (who is now gonzo). Times have changed - I doubt I’ll ever buy another car new ( much less for cash ) ever again.
No accidents ! How lucky can one get!!! While the paint is still in good shape and takes a great shine, there are the signs of age- the generic P/S fender started to rust about 2 years ago and lately the D/S fender is giving in..
I want to thank every one at SAABNET for all the guidance and advice provided to me over the years. I started out able to change a tire, a belt, thermostat, plugs, oil & air filters. Thanks to this board and contributors I collected the tools and confidence to do most all the work myself – brakes, calipers, rotors, struts, heater valve(PITA), brushes, brake switch, AIC cleaning, water pump, engine mounts, tranny box, dash cover skin re-do, clutch, turnlever rebuild, slave cylinder and 2 headliners! I’m sure I forgot a few items but otherwise, this car wouldn’t have been on the road. The stuff that required a lift or press, like a main or rear seal, I left to my pal, the indy.
The Saab is going to the Salvation Army donations – and I hope somebody that ends up with it keeps her on the road- if not, somebody out there may have some transplant opportunities – and I wish you all well .
I’m graduating too- a little while ago I got a ‘97 NG900S and have already reworked the front end- mounts, shocks/struts, rotors and pimped out the door/column frames with the S-O-N appliqués and door pocket coffee mug holders. I still like the seating ergonomics more of the old car -than the low, harder to get in/out of ’97. But I gotta change with the times (belatedly) too.
Thanks for everything SAABERS
