Those early engines had an oil fill cap in the valve cover, and small oil dipstick. If you use the 81 transmission, you'll probably want to also use the 81's valve cover, so it is easier to add oil. Also, the 81 will have the small early inner drivers. Your 87 will have the large later ones. You either need to swap the drivers in the transmissions, or the tripod bearings in the axles. Lastly, as the other poster mentioned, your gearbox centers the shifter internally, the 81 uses a spring in the shifter, so you'll need to swap that out too.

If you just want one that will bolt up, I have a good one from an 87 S with the type 6 primaries I'd sell for $300.
