My 1979 900 GLE keeps dying. Posted by BAAB [Email] (#1214) [Profile/Gallery] (more from BAAB) on Mon, 10 Jun 2013 21:23:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 1979 900 GLE has stranded me a couple of times and now I basically cannot drive the car until I fix the problem. After the car get hot, it won't take more than a few minutes for the car to just die, and I cannot restart it until after it has cooled down for at least 45 minutes or so. I can't recreate the problem at will, but the last time it died, I noticed that the alternator light came on about 2 seconds before it died. I'm at a loss as to what the problem is, but one thing I notice is that the alternator is pretty noisy and I can hear and feel a little vibration coming from the alternator. I replaced the coil with no change. The fuel pump is less than 2 years old and appears to be working fine. At all times all electronic items on the car work fine. However, I did notice that if I turn on every electronic thing on the car, the stereo will lose power and turn itself off at idle the second I turn on one of the turn signals, but it will come back on if I turn the turn signal back off. I think the problem might be the alternator, but how can I test? What else might the problem be? Thanks for the help!
