Prussian blue is essentially blue (artist's) oil paint. It has a few properties that ordinary oil paint lacks but for our purposes they aren't important. So Don't go to any great lengths to get real Prussian blue, just get to an artist's supply store and buy a small tube of oil paint. I like to use yellow because it's so easy to see the pattern and you can easily get it all cleaned off (although that's probably not a big deal).

That piece of chewed up metal might be bad news. It's most likely either a piece of a synchromesh guide ring or a piece of a bearing roller spacer and if that's the case then that gearbox won't run for long if at all. If you can post a picture of it we may be able to identify it. One thing you can do is set the unit on a bench, put a pin punch or small rod through the hole in shift control rod to use as a shift lever, insert a clutch shaft into the top chainwheel backwards so that it projects toward the front and clamp a pair of vicegrips on it to use as a crank handle. Now you can spin the entire unit in all the gears and hopefully detect any gross internal defects. Remember that you spin the input anti-clockwise (viewed from in front) to simulate normal use. That isn't foolproof of course, it can have a defect that's only evident under serious load or high RPMs but if you detect a noise or other problem by spinning it manually you know that it has a problem.
