Thanks Swedecar -- I think you are right --- I finally found the Saab OE manual and it calls for the shaft to come out the bottom. So, it's a bench operation.
We're mounting a steering wheel release for the racecar that has to have a fitting welded on the end of the shaft, so I'm trying to rig it so that I have a way to remove the shaft if the new bearing support has to be changed. We use basically a rodend bearing that has the ID upsized so the 3/4 inch shaft can fit through it, and then the fitting goes out the end where the old needle bearing assembly is.
