This was posted (and sounds similar to my cars problem) on the 9000 board:
"This is a 1987 9000T.
Driving home yesterday in our very hilly area, had some missing under load in all gears. On a long, steep uphill (sea level to ~ 1000') missing became worse. Pulled off road and looked. Found nothing. Restarted up the hill. While in second gear and missing, engine stopped, and would not restart.
Couldn't find a problem, and assumed fuel pump feed pump gone (I could hear main pump on start attempts). Had car towed home.
Today after work, used timing light to check for spark, and found none.
So, not the fuel pump. A test spark plug at end of ignition coil HT wire fired well. No spark at end of plug wires. Removed distributor cap, rotor turns OK.
Removed distributor, replaced with a spare one. Everything now runs. Retimed it. My conclusion? Rotor failure. Any other conjectures?
Now I'm curious how does something as simple as a distributor rotor fail? What type of resistor is in the rotor? (I've never before had a rotor failure since I started driving Saabs in 1976)."
