The tag is on the top of the chain case at the front of the unit and the number in question will begin with the letters GM (for: gearbox, manual). The rear pinion bearing and rear cluster shaft bearing were changed in 1989. The cluster shaft bearing change was a real improvement regarding wear, the larger rear pinion shaft bearing doesn't seem to make much difference from what I've seen. 1989 And 1990 units are the same except for a different third gear ratio. The big changes came in 1991 and all '91 through '93/4 units are essentially the same except for the front motor mount boss. I'm not impressed with the 1991 revisions and my favorite C900 gearboxes are the 1989-'90 five speeds although the pre-'89 units have a slightly higher final drive ratio. Body style (3 dr, 4 dr, CV, etc.) never played a role in unit application, only NA vs. turbo and those differences were typically minor and mostly just primary drive and motor mount options. If your '90 CV has it's original transmission then it has a good version and you should take good care of it. Don't grind the reverse gears and when it starts whining in high gears or having other symptoms get it rebuilt before it breaks any gears, there aren't as many good used units around now and the gears are getting scarcer every day.
