Funny story.....
A month ago I was finally forced to address a nagging issue with the wipers on my other Swedish classic, a 1988 Volvo 240 wagon. The magnets in the motor casing had come loose, rendering the motor useless. With a little patience and modern adhesive I was able to carry out an effective, low dollar repair. As I was doing so I recall marveling over how reliable the wipers in my '91 900 have been. It seems I'm always fixing something on the Volvo and the Saab just soldiers on no questions asked. That was the case until today.
Living in the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina, we tend to get a lot of rain and wipers get a real workout as a result. As I popped out to get a coffee and enjoy a misty morning here, I once again bragged silently in my head about how the wipers in this car never give trouble and still work like new. Not twenty minutes later, BANG, the driver's side wiper quits sweeping. I figured it might be the cable and popped the hood to check, only to find that the pulley itself had walked right off the shaft. I've never seen that one!
Anyhow, after getting the AC compressor/mounting bracket and tensioner bracket out of the way, I removed the transmission and assessed the fit of the pulley on the shaft. Fit was still tight enough that to reassemble them would require a press/vice, so I went ahead and put all the parts back together after taking the time to grease the shafts in their housings. Everything works as it should again, and should be fine for another few years at least. If it fails again like this, I'll drill and tap the pulley for a set screw to hold it snug on the shaft.
Total repair time - 1.5 hours
Anyone attempting wiper transmission removal without removing the AC brackets and compressor is making their life unnecessarily difficult. Do yourself a favor and remove all of it. If you have the means, take the time to slot the lower mounting hole on the compressor bracket. I did so last time I had the engine out, which made this repair a fair bit easier today.
