It will only go in one way and leave room for the seal. The rim goes in last (so the bushing goes in small end first). With the seal out you can see the rim but with the unit in the car you may need a mirror and penlight to get eyes on it. The shaft can move off center without the bushing and when the shaft is off center the seal can leak. If I've rebuilt 500 of these I've seen maybe 3 broken bushings but every year they get older and more brittle. I would be really easy to make some bronze bushings and they would probably work just fine and last forever.
