I'm with RS on this - take the pipe out from under the car and work on it somewhere not under the car...
Are you in the rust belt? If so, imho, this is a great job to pass the buck on and take to your local SAAB indy. It can be absolute torture to get the old O2 sensor out. Seriously! Of the 2 I've dealt with, one I ended up cutting off, drilling out, jigsawing slits, and chipping out the remains with a cold chisel before retapping... I had tried everything else first: penetrating fluid, torch, freezing, etc, using a socket on a 4' breaker bar. The O2 sensor socket was a joke, even with a hose clamp around it to reduce flexing.
The second time I did this, I bought a new O2 sensor, new downpipe, installed the 2 in one go and tossed the old ones. That was much easier!
If you live in Arizona, or sunny California, you may find it comes out much easier! I live in a place where there is salt and slush on the roads 6 months of the year (or seemingly so!)...
