I've got a couple c900 sedans: 1989, and 1993. Both had the central locking fail. I tried swapping modules to no avail. Maybe it is the door switch or wiring, but I've never taken the time to sort that. I should, because the central locking is really nice when it is working.
The 2 cars behave a little differently.
The 1989 is exactly like yours except I can get to 3 o'clock to unlock the trunk. I don't think I can pull the key there, and going back to 12:00 leaves it locked. This is our winter beater and we live in a city, so I'm ok with the situation.
The 1993 is currently left unlocked, but can also be locked. I haven't used the trunk in a little while on that one, so I forget the details of how to switch back and forth. I was having difficulty with the central locking of that one on the trunk before it failed elsewhere, so it is possible one of the parts of the mechanism is bent.
I'm pretty sure I removed the auto-locking part off of one of the cars. Maybe the 1993?
When I get a chance, I will investigate. I would say that if you can reinstate central locking, that is the best!
The other thing to be very careful of - if the screws come loose on the trunk latch, it can achieve a "stuck" position, where it is impossible to open from the outside. I say this because sometimes, the levers for the rear seat operation break, and it would be a PITA to get back there in that situation (this is the case on our 1989). The "upside" is that eventually the screws will jiggle completely out, transforming the "stuck" state to an "always open" state - hopefully not while driving, but usually so! (ask me how I know!!)
good luck!
