Footwell rust repair

I bought a 1988 900 TC with dubious pedigree back in 2009 because the body was original and (I thought)rust-free. I put it right mechanically over time, the exterior is beautiful, and this was going to be the summer of the interior, which wasn't bad to start out with. I picked up the carpet and (whoa!) the driver side floor looks like it's been underwater for decades. The rest of the floor is not too bad. I suspect a lot of the rust was on my watch because although the car has always been garaged, the driver's side footwell is the lowest point because of the slope of the floor to the drain.
I will see what is left after I have scraped, wire-brushed, sand-blasted and metal-prepped the area but the floor is irregular enough and I think there will be enough metal it won't make sense to try a fix with a flat piece of 18 guage with a couple of creases in it and I plan to fill and reinforce the weak areas ('strategically') with a combination of structural epoxy and fiberglass matte. I have about 1.5 lbs. of J-B Weld on order.
I can't imagine I am pioneering here but I couldn't find any reference to use of epoxy for such a repair. Any advice from somebody who has gone before or who knows better would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Glen
