Correct on the ejector pump twist to get in. Anything could disconnect, and you have to have it apart to put in a new pump insert, and the plastic can be challenged by the removal / installation. I've seen them broken off from manhandling. Or malhandling.......
Grounds are key, with a rust bucket, you might have to use some jumpers instead of the chassis.......
Also, not sure if that ECU is prone to dropping a ground, but with these old cars there are always multiple problems as part of the solution. It might something as benign as a bad connection on the coil. I posted a eureka moment on that awhile back.
