I've painted them. I actually changed the color on one, so yours will be easier. They are actually painted from the factory, but you don't notice any worn areas because the substrate color is close to the topcoat.
My advice would be to take it to a good paint store and have them scan the color and have a mixologist match it exactly. Then you can paint it with a good waterborne urethane in a satin or semigloss finish. I've sprayed mine.
Alternatively, you can go to an autobody supply place and have them go through the same process, but they can give you the same paint that is used on interior automotive plastic parts. I'm not sure what the makeup is, but that stuff bonds like iron. I had a grey part painted oxblood for my 86 Chrysler and it's still holding up decades later.
