I'm dealing with somewhat related turn signal stalk/signalling issues in my '89 900S. The stalk on my '89 came loose from its housing near the steering column and opposite of the wiper control stalk. Upon disassembly of the turn stalk module, I found that the main pivot pin in the aluminum housing had sheared. I scavenged the comparable but intact housing from an assembly harvested from my '88 900S and reassembled the signal stalk and electrical switch module.
I've recovered the ability to engage cornering lamps in sustained on-mode and turn signals that flash on demand, but do not enjoy automatic cancellation of directional signalling nor the ability to switch between dim and bright headlight beams.
Reasoning that, despite my efforts at R&R, there remained an unknown and fatal flaw in the unit, I retrieved from my garage attic parts archive yet a 3rd signalling module taken from a former C900 of unknown vintage but including the cruise control wiring harness. It stays firmly in the L or R position and the white boss that extends from the housing upon engagement is present and operating properly.
Ever optimistic, I dropped the recently refurbished module from its housing and verified that that unit, as well, properly extended the cancelling boss that could be readily tripped by hand to disengage the signal. Here's where things got weird.
I transferred the electrical leads from the refurbished unit to the corresponding terminals on the unadulterated signalling/cruise control stalk. Initial tests of the new module indicated that it restored the ability to alternate between bright and dim headlights, but the left flasher didn't... flash. The only outcome of engaging left turn signal was steady illumination of the left front cornering lamp. I removed the module from the steering column mount and checked/reseated all electrical connections. On the next trial following reconnection of power at the negative battery terminal, I heard a growling sound coming from the underdash turn signal relay upon engagement of either L or R signals that is almost certainly the same as that described by Koop. I once again checked and reseated electrical connections (it's a pretty cramped space), the growl went away, and I have flashing signals at both corners upon demand. What I don't have, once again, is capacity for automatic signal cancellation nor the ability to engage high beams.
I'm happy to be street-legal again-- it's just plain crazy and cop-bait to drive without directionals, and the low beams are sufficient for 90% of my driving needs. Nonetheless, I've found the restoration project to be both error-prone,tedious and, ultimately, unsatisfying since I haven't been able to restore full functionality. I presume that the signal-cancelling tab on the steering column is broken or missing and that may just have to remain as a chronic problem-- I just have to remember to manually disengage signals. I have NO idea why the hi-low toggle engaged upon tug doesn't work, especially since the latest installation briefly enabled that switch before I disassembled to reseat connections and restore left turn signal.
Sigh... the joys of Saab 900 care and feeding. Good luck, Koop, check your electrical connections at the turn signal module, both for proper configuration and for secure connection at spade terminals of the module. I'll bet you get rid of the growl from the flasher relay and hope that you regain full functionality. Please let us know what you find out, you and I surely aren't the first nor the last to have worked through these issues.
