Primary beiaring queston....

I've a 91 base model with about 260k on the clock, an have decided to open the primary case for an inspection and possible renewal of chains/tensioner feet. Things appear to be fine, although the tensioner feet do have some grooving, oh and the bearing for the upper sprocket seems to have some play. I can rock the sprocket a bit on its bearing, and am thinking that's a sign it's time to change it.
Does this sprocket normally have any play like what I've described? I know it's held in place by a snap ring, which has me wondering what the fit is like when all is right.
Thanks, folks.
