I prefer the sound of your counter-torque measures over the transmission binding method. Sounds easy enough to fashion up, too. Homebrewed tools are fun to put to use.
As for the clutch, no, it's holding, but I'd like to change it along with the rear main. I've always preferred making batches of repairs, so the sprocket bearing, clutch and slave, pilot bearing, and rear main combo makes for a satisfying list to check off.
You say my car is likely using #7 sprockets? Heck, I live in Western North Carolina, way up on a mountain. The road to the house is dirt/gravel, long and steep! The car really handles it in stride, but I've wished for lower primary reduction I always hear about people lusting on the #8 set, but I'm the other way around! I've yet to spend the time to research sourcing the parts for such a change, but I know it's possible.
