I also remember a wheel bearing test where you jack up the front of the car and then lower one wheel down on an immovable object. Then start the car and put it in second or third gear (I forget) and "accelerate" to 20-30mph. Put the transmission in neutral and then shut the ignition off and let the wheel coast down to stationary while you listen from outside the vehicle.
The bad wheel bearing will give a distinct whine/moan.
It's been a long time since I last did this but it helps pin down which side is bad.
