I've done a bunch of reading, two or three years ago. This is just my notes - nothing pretending to be official. No place to hook up any gauge. There is some way to read "Error Codes" I think? Don't know. Too lazy to look up codes. The common "test" is to install the unit on your ABS System (Don't forget to turn the key OFF and pump the brake pedal at least 50 times before loosening any ABS Accumulator!
Now that you've installed the one to be "tested" let the engine idle at least 30 seconds to build up pressure in the accumulator. Then, while keeping your eyes on the 2 dash lights (PARK BRAKE and BRAKE FLUID), start pumping on the brake pedal and count the pumps it takes to get those two lights to light up red - Pump quickly, but we're not going for a record here! All my testing was done on a 1990 SPG.
Now that you have a "number", all I can do is offer my observations. I've had several ABS cars in my yard. A Brand New ABS unit (Saab or AC-Delco) needed 33-36 pumps to light the 2 lights (I tested 2 units). Of five used ones tested, the lowest was 9 pumps, the best used ones are at 16 pumps to light the two lights. All of these worked fine operationally - no odd lights, nothing unusual. Good luck! Vern
