If it were me, I'd raise the front end, set it down on jacks and crawl under to visually inspect the linkage. It could be easier at this stage to have a helper shift or try and shift through the gears. If the linkage is bad, you'll see either the rubber flexing/shifting between the two metal brackets or one half of the completely broken linkage move back and forth while the other piece remains stationary.
It'll be pretty obvious.
If you're really needing a fast repair (assuming the link is broken or failing), you can use a bunch of tightly-cinched zip-ties to reconnect the "sandwich" together that will last for a certain amount of time of regular driving. Did this for a friend recently when his linkage was getting really stretchy and ineffective.
