What was the condition of the old crankshaft thrust bearings? Did you clean and mic them and re-use them or replace them? New thrust bearings are in short supply and even then they seem to be only standard spec. Used ones often show very little wear or any sort of damage and are re-usable (I know...blasphemy, huh?). When you had the engine on your stand did you do the standard two opposed screwdrivers and a dial indicator gauge to measure the end float with only the crank installed in the block? Of course 0.016" is way too much. Be sure you are measuring the actual crankshaft and not the pulley as it may be slipping on the shaft.
