My 89S has a crank sensor (which has since been converted to a conventional distributor). Yes replace the sensor with a new one if you can find something that is OEM quality. But it won't be easy to find one.
Take off the AC pulley before attempting to get at the main bolt. You'll want to make a cut down socket to do so.
I've always been able to borrow the Saab special tool when I am doing the job. (having a helper to hold the ring gear is invaluable)
However the Tom Townsend method of putting on the wrench and bumping the starter works IF you can find something solid to hold the wrench. I ended up cracking the AC case housing because I hadn't properly secured the wrench.
